Hero vs Villain in Hero Legends
Pick a side for the session - cash fantasy, arrests, bounty, and when to swap.
Two fantasies, one city
Hero Legends is built around a live tug-of-war: villains create crime and cash pressure, heroes answer alarms, chase, and arrest. Neither side is a tutorial dead-end. This page helps you choose a first-session identity and understand the systems that punish greed on both teams.
New players should still open Getting Started for buy-order basics, then return here when they are ready to main a side for an evening.
Villain fantasy - print cash, manage heat
Best for: players who want clear PvE-like objectives inside a PVP world.
Core loop:
- Pick robbery targets from How to Make Money
- Execute clean tech from How to Rob and Bank robbery
- Sell before heroes collapse the area
- Survive bounty / prison with Escape Prison
Strengths:
- Fast map learning (Bank, Jewelry, Vault, Cargo, Military Base)
- Obvious upgrade goals (Invisibility, bag space, combat escorts)
- Teleport destination choice after V2 makes grind routes efficient
Weaknesses:
- Full servers punish slow canister greed
- Downed arrest windows send you to jail if heroes finish the fight
- Bounty turns every street into a spotlight
Starter kit idea: Invisibility first, then a real damage power. Skip Magic Blast.
Hero fantasy - rotate, peel, arrest
Best for: players who like reading the map and winning fights that matter.
Core loop:
- Watch hero tower signals (red during active robbery after V2)
- Rotate with Flight / Speed / Spider city traversal
- Win the street fight using PVP habits
- Secure the downed arrest instead of chasing into a 1v3
- Spend reward cash into the same power economy villains use
Strengths:
- Constant combat practice
- Tower UI makes objectives readable
- Arrests create prison pressure that shapes villain behavior
Weaknesses:
- Quiet servers feel slower if crime is rare
- Bad rotates waste the map expansion from V4
- Over-chasing without arrests donates free resets to villains
Starter kit idea: Super Strength or Speed foundation, then a control or ranged tool. Gadgets like the hero shield matter - see Gadgets.
Side-by-side comparison
| Question | Villain | Hero |
|---|---|---|
| Fastest cash lesson | Usually yes | Medium |
| Best combat lab | Contested exits | Most of the session |
| Key system | Bounty + prison | Tower alerts + arrests |
| Day-one power | Invisibility | Strength / Speed |
| Failure mode | Greed + jail | Chase without finishing |
When to swap sides
- Server balance UI from V2 makes extreme 20v2 lobbies less common - still swap if your team is empty
- Swap to villain when you need NanoTech money fast
- Swap to hero when you want cleaner PVP reps before a tournament-of-one ego night
- Swap after patches that gut your main power - check Updates Hub
Reputation is not a costume
Later updates lean harder into NPC reputation reactions (latest update). High villain heat and hero fame change how the city feels, but they do not replace mechanical skill. Manage identity through the Players Hub overview.
Recommended first week plan
- Two villain sessions focused only on Jewelry -> Bank -> Vault
- One Military Base lesson with turret discipline
- Two hero sessions focused on tower rotates and arrests
- One build planning night with best powers and best builds
- One patch-check on Discord via links

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Should I play hero or villain first in Hero Legends?
Villain teaches cash routes faster; hero teaches fights and arrests. Commit for a session, not forever.
Which side makes more money?
Villain robberies are the clearest printer, especially Military Base and Vault, if you sell and survive.
Do heroes earn cash too?
Yes. Arrests and response play fund the same power shop - they just learn the map through fights.
Can I switch sides later?
Yes when server tools allow. Many players swap based on balance and personal goals.
What power should each side buy first?
Villains: Invisibility. Heroes: a solid combat foundation like Super Strength or Super Speed. Details in Getting Started.
